This course is designed to help students gain optimum benefit from their study abroad experience by providing an introduction to various aspects of British life, culture, politics and history. In addition to classes and excursions, each student undertakes an independent study on some aspect of British Life. The course also aims to help students find their bearings and adjust to life in London, which may be very different from what they know. Among the topics included are issues of identity, sovereignty issues, empire, immigration and ethnicity, sport and fashion.
This course will introduce you to the contemporary issues in doing business in the United Kingdom. It will illustrate the unique challenges experienced by a range of different businesses in the changing U.K. business environment. The forces of globalization will be identified and discussed in detail to explore how these forces can be exploited in the U.K. In addition, the importance of accessing the appropriate sources of information & using effective communications technology when doing business in this country will be examined. The program will also explore the link between theory and practice by using a variety of case study material to examine the business strategies of some of the leading companies in the U.K.
This is an advanced, intensive, course intended to improve reading comprehension, oral comprehension, written expression and grammar. Students will be exposed to a variety of media: newspapers, magazines, televised news and the internet. Emphasis will be placed on sophistication, and grammatical correctness, of expression with an aim to increasing student awareness of the need to go beyond “Globish” English and reach an advanced, and more credible, level of writing and speaking. There will also be a significant part of the course dedicated to public speaking and the development of oral skills in general.
This course provides an overview of the use of analytic tools by managers for decision making, performance evaluation and control. Students will learn to plan, organise, implement and present a number of models with an emphasis on providing quantitative data to support decision-making in a practical and applicable way. The scope of this course will encompass the start-up to large organisations.
This course focuses how to gain the funding necessary to launch new ventures, using the investor’s perspective to inform the student. A critical analysis, based upon best practices and case studies, will be made on building sound financial models to give evidence of the value proposition of a particular product, investment, or new venture. Routes to raising finance, such as debt, equity, customer contracts and crowd sourcing will be explored, as will cash flow analysis and the staging of investment.
Provides an overview of legal issues affecting human resources management. The course is designed to increase the student’s awareness of laws for employees in international organizations, recognition of legal problems and their impact on human resources decisions. Topics include laws, regulations and labour management relations in an international environment. Special attention will be paid to the strategic nature of recruiting for new ventures.
This course focuses on the legal imperatives applying to new and developing enterprises. Business Formation Law, Contract Law, Labour and Company Law, and Product/Service Liability are studied. This course also discusses the rights, duties, and responsibilities of key individuals within organisations, as well as appraising the consequences and remedies available in cases of financial difficulty or failure. The over-arching aim of this course is to provide practical legal knowledge for real-world situations within the scope of start-up processes and new ventures in the UK, although international perspective will be given.
This course conveys the principles, tools, techniques and methods employed in order to be effective in managing projects and leading the people responsible for executing the tasks that comprise the project. Students will be exposed to both the classical foundations of project management and an array of real-life project issues, with a strong focus on projects within start-up processes and new ventures. Upon completion of this course, students will understand the basic concepts and critical factors of initiating, planning, organizing, controlling, and running a project. An argument will be made against standardized solutions and priority will be given to the ability to adapt one's project management style to unique project characteristics.

This course will explore team-building models, stages of team development, communication issues, trust/relationship models, and getting teams to think creatively. Case studies illustrating the characteristics of successful teams will be studied, and students will engage in exercises to make them more effective and creative team members or leaders.
This course focuses on how to research, write and present effective business plans. Students will be challenged to analyse plans and to develop their own in a methodical manner. Key elements of the plan, including executive summary, market analysis, company description, organization and management, marketing and sales strategies, service and/or product line, funding requirements, and financials will all be addressed. A strong emphasis will also be made on how to successfully pitch the business plan.

Students will gain a better analysis of the dynamics of change in organizations and how to develop action plans specific to the organisation’s goals and team members. The use of case study material will illustrate the concepts covered and the value of their application in real-world situations.

Students will analyse the costs and benefits of integrating social media platforms across numerous business functions, e.g. marketing, sales, human resources, supply chain management, and CRM using analytics/metrics tools, turnkey mobile applications, etc. Students will also be exposed to collaborative communities to analyse cost-effective, creative solutions.

This course focuses on developing the practical knowledge and specific skills necessary to launch and increase sales for new ventures. This course focuses on how, in an increasingly competitive and fast-changing economy, managers can effectively pilot innovation projects in both entrepreneurial and established firms. Various types of innovation will be studied, as will their opportunities and challenges. Students will then examine how to build organizations that successfully identify, implement, and commercialize innovations. Design will be presented as an invaluable element to help overcome a main challenge of innovation – how to generate appeal through novelty while retaining enough familiarity to take the innovation to the market successfully.

A customer-focused approach will be used to better assess the target market and assure that the new product is aligned with a commercial opportunity. This course aims to show how companies and entrepreneurs use intellectual property in today’s knowledge- and innovation-driven economy. Strategies concerning copyrights, trademarks, patents, and production techniques will be explored. Students will learn how these IP assets work and how they are used strategically by a wide variety of different types of companies in various industries.
